In Mexico back when it was first founded it was a "mans world". Men were looked at as surperior compared to women. They got to go to school and were able to work in jobs they wanted to do. Women on the other hand did not get to finish school and went straight to learning how to be a house wife. It was expected of women to cook, clean and bare children. Even though this infornation is not new to me , I am still shocked everytime I read it. How a culture can be so sexist is amazing to me. I understand that it was like that in other places as well don't get me wrong but it still does not make it right. The fact that Mexican women were suppose to be obedient to any men is a sick joke. Growing up in the current times I was tought respect those who respect you , and thats how I think it should be.
Although the role for men has stay the same, the role for women have changed so much. They have gained the right to vote and run in an election. This change occured over the past 50 years. Today women are becoming even more involved in politics as well as social movements. Another thing that has changed for women is there ability to go to school, today Mexcian women are aloud to not only go to school but earn their degress and obtain real careers outside the house if they choose to. The only thing that has not changed for women is the way they are treated in the work place , often times they are harrassed and talked down to. Also they tend to earn less then men do even if they are doing the same job. For me its mixed emotions, I am happy that women are able to do more and have some what of a voice, but it is unfotunate that they work just has hard for less of a reward. If I am going to work as hard as a man or harder I would expect equal or more pay.
Another constant struggle women ednure everyday is their saftey. In 1993 there became a case called the Juarez murders. This took place in Juarez, Mexico where over 400 women were either murdered or just disappeared. Being the weaker sex anyways women can not always defend themselves. Many times they were kidnapped, tortured, and killed ; many cases remanied unsloved and most of the women are still missing. The killer was never caught , and though it may not be like this now women still face hard times with their saftey. With the cartel being such a big thing right now not only women but men are also in just as much danger,
After doing research I have so much respect for not only women who lived back in the day but Mexican women now. They have fought for their rights and though still get looked down upon have not given up. They work hard and follow their dreams regardless of the amount they get paid or the harassment they endure on a day to day bases. The dangers they face just by walking out the door is enough to make anyone stay inside, but they dont put their life on hold. Although some men still live in the past I know not all of them are like that and most Mexican men would do anything for their women.
